Comenius project ”Renewable energy: a challenge for the future”
1 August 2009 to 31 July 2011
Source : www.energeiepreise.net
Objectives
- Acquire knowledge on the existing and future (renewable) energy production/consumption and climate change (pupils).
- Create awareness among the pupils of their own energy consumption in relation the living conditions (pupils).
- Study the possibilities/barriers of integrating the education in renewable energy and its relation to climate change in the current curricula (teachers).
Though the project the pupils (and teachers) would:
- Get insight in the living conditions in other countries
- Get insight in the possibilities for renewable energy in the countries.
- Communicate in English and in their mother tongue,
- Work with information technology and science and technology.
Type of project
The project was mainly a project where teachers should travel to make arrangements so that pupils could exchange information and work together. As we found out that the cooperation between the pupils improved when they know each other, we tried to let as many pupils travel as the budget allowed and even organized full exchanges between classes of some schools.
Participating schools
The following schools were involved:
- Lykeio Agiou Nikolaou, Limassol, Cyprus (coordinators: Dina Malas, Niki Yiannakou)
- Viborg Tekniske Gymnasium, Viborg, Denmark (coordinator, also for whole project: Willem A.H. Asman)
- Fyns HF-Kursus, Odense, Denmark (coordinator : Lone Bille Hansen)
- Lycée Maurice Ravel, Saint Jean de Luz, France (coordinator : Fabienne Lasserre)
- BBS II Leer, Leer, Germany (coordinator: Ulrich Schachtschneider)
- Istituto Istruzione Superiore “Isa Conti E. Vainicher”, Lipari, Italy (coordinator: Maria Jose Calderone)
- IES “Tomas y Valiente”, Peñaranda de Bracamonte, Spain (Mari Luz Martin Santos)
Workshops and meetings held
| 22 – 24 October 2009: | Limassol, Cyprus. |
6 – 8 February 2010:
| Peñaranda de Bracamonte/Salamanca, Spain. |
| 8 – 13 April 2010: | Saint Jean de Luz, France |
| 28 September – 1 October 2010 : | Lipari, Italy |
| 28 February – 4 March 2010 : | Odense and Viborg, Denmark |
16 – 18 June 2010:
| Leer, Germany |
Apart from the workshops and meetings, a full exchange between classes from BBS II Leer and Viborg Tekniske Gymnasium and a full exchange between classes from BBS II Leer and Fyns HF-Kursus were achieved.
Total mobilities achieved
The total number of mobilities (voyage of 1 person back and forth) was:
Pupils: 137
Teachers: 83
Results relevant to others
The following information is also relevant for pupils and teachers that did not participate in the project:
Energy inquiry for pupils. This is to find the consumption different kinds of energy at the pupil’s home. There exist different versions of the inquiry that can be used in different countries, depending on the available energy systems and on the possibility of the pupils to work with spread sheets. The energy inquiry can be used e.g. compare the energy consumption at homes in different countries. The first version of the energy inquiry was made by pupils of BBS II. The improvements were made by teachers of different countries.
[ Energy inquiry ]
Energy scene for pupils. This is a description of the energy situation of a pupil at home with pictures and some information on the hobbies and a picture of the house. This information was meant as a starting point for communication between the pupils. It appeared that it was difficult to work with it with the many schools we were. Energy scenes, however, were shown in the class and at the website and gave insight in the living situation in different countries.
[ Energy Scene ]
Presentations on renewable energy techniques in English (made by pupils). These were prepared by pupils that travelled to a workshop.
[ Presentations ]
Method to work together on renewable energy. During the exchanges between the German and Danish schools a programme was developed to let the pupils work together. This method appeared to be successful.
[ Meeting Leer to Viborg ]
Part of this programme was making joint presentations in English about visits to companies and institutes that work with renewable energy and showing them to each other. Some presentations are available here:

Integration of renewable energy and climate change into the current curriculum (teachers). The teachers were in general describing their possibilities to integrate these subjects into the current curriculum. The activities presented here are activities that can also be done when there is no Comenius project at the school. So it was not about the integration of the Comenius project as such, which in fact involved more activities.
